1000 Women Trust takes steps to become female-owned energy plant, enhance fight against GBV
CAPE TOWN. – 1000 Women Trust, a major role-player in the fight against gender-based violence, has taken a giant step towards becoming a first female owned and run, locally constructed energy plant in the Western Cape, which will enhance its capacity to combat femicide and abuse in the country.
If its bid to become an independent power producer in partnership with the City of Cape Town succeeds, 1000 Women Trust will finance all its projects to fight gender-based violence and femicide, expand its operations and will also be able to support fifty women’s small businesses annually.
1000 Women Trust attended a briefing at the City of Cape Town for Independent Power Producers (IPP) on Tuesday 15 th March.
The City wish to become less dependent on Eskom, source more energy from renewable sources and wish to source at least 300 megawatt produced by other supplies.
There will be off-take agreement opportunities for IPPs as well as wheeling agreements.
This will enable private plants small-scale embedded generation (SSEG). The process of wheeling is in a pilot phase and should be ready for proper use within a year.
IPP’s of up to 100 megawatts are now much easier to register.
The City of Cape Town is now awaiting tenders for plants that will be constructed by outside companies, and that will involve a 20-year off-take agreement with the City.
Normally, these plants are constructed by a big company with most of the expertise being sources from abroad and very little benefit to the local population.
“This makes our project very unique as we will source labour from women and make use of female engineers and advisors from local sources,” says Tina Thiart, director of 1000 Women Trust.
“A suggestion would be to start with maybe a 10 megawatt plant and try and get our own off-set agreement with the local municipality or from farms and industries surrounding our plant,” added Thiart.
The idea is to construct the plant at the farm in the agricultural heartland of the Sandveld in the Western Cape.
The farm is where 1000 Women Trust, in partnership with the Ruben Richards Foundation and Namakwaland Sitrus is set to establish a restoration centre for survivors of gender-based violence, and a joint venture to empower women economically.
The farm will be known as 1000 Women Farm and will accommodate 100 survivors of gender-based violence. Secondary housing will also be provided on the farm for the women, as well as a restoration centre to rehabilitate women who were previously subjected to gender-based violence.
“Our concept (of generating an independent power plant) is a modular one and can easily be expanded as the need arises and funds become available,” Thiart remarked.
“Even if we start with only the farm we can grow. An investor will want to see the return on investment. Once they see that ROI, I’m sure they will be keen.
“There are still some technical homework to be done, like engineering reports and the process of registering with case studies.
“We can get there and will achieve the goal of being the first female locally constructed plant that will give back to the community and uplift women,” Thiart explained.
“Profits from solar supply will fund all the work at 1000 Women Trust. As well as the secondary housing for women (on the 1000 Women Farm). In addition, we will be able to support 50 women’s small businesses every year,” Thiart said.
1000 Women Trust has already equipped 2500 teachers and parents since January 2022 through anti-bullying training to fight bullying at school – a pandemic which adversely affects 57 % of learners of SA schools annually.
1000 Women has become one of South Africa’s most trusted agencies in assisting departments of education with toolkits to fight bullying in primary and secondary schools.
The Trust annually runs trauma training courses on WhatsApp and person-to-person which become catalyst for the healing of women and girls in many communities who were subjected to gender-based violence. More than 5000 women have already done the person-to-person or WhatsApp training.

1000 Women Trust is still running 45 community soup kitchen that provide food for at least 15000 people a day in areas in the Cape Peninsula.
The Trust previously successfully launched the national #MakeTime-campaign to inspire parents to invest time to talk to their sons about the values of non-violence, gender equality and respect for women and girls.
Currently, 1000 Women Trust is also engaged in a partnership with the Western Cape department of social development to mobilize men in local communities to change their attitudes and mind-set and to commit themselves to non-violence and respect for women and girls in their neighbourhood.
