Funny-man serious about GBV

Words by Eunice Stoltz

Born to be a performer, Charles Tertiens is a South African comedy magician who with wit, entertains and charms his audiences. Saying, ‘his objective is escapism; to have his audience escape reality, even if for a moment, taking them to a magical world where they laugh and let loose’. Charles is well known for his corporate characters such as Karl Ahari, Cash Crusader, and Al Dente the Great. Working alongside the director, puppeteer, and designer, Craig Leo, Charles performed at major corporate events as a magician, stilt performer, and as various uniquely crafted characters. Born and raised in Cape Town, he started his speech and drama training at the age of six years. From this young age, he featured in various children productions, and in Grade 7 his curiosity for magic started. After finishing school, he studied Human Resource Management at the then Tygerberg College. He soon changed this course after his father applied on his behalf at the University of Cape Town, where Charles then, four years later graduated as a Bilingual performer in the Musical Stream. His career as a professional performer started in 2002 as the character Willie in the Magnet Theatre production, Onnest’bo. His talent did not go by unnoticed and in 2005 he starred in the TV series, Known Gods, and from there both his on-stage and TV-persona developed. As for today, Charles is still the born performer and comedy magician. You might see him when he is the Master of Ceremonies, hear him over the radio as a voice artist or escape reality when he performs at corporate events and shows. Charles Tertiens is also an ambassador for the 1000 Women Trust. He firmly believes that violence is not the answer to the issues men face and that men should seek help when they experience challenges.
